About

Dr Josie Spataro

Josie is a Clinical Psychologist and founder of Spataro Psychology. She brings more than 20 years’ experience in private and public mental health service provision working in the interface of medicine and psychiatry. She is the author of several international publications based on her Doctorate research (PhD) that investigated the longitudinal impact of child sexual abuse on adult outcomes of mental health and suicide. She is a full member of the Australian Psychological Society and its Clinical College, is a Psychology Board approved supervisor, and is registered with Medicare.

Josie has enjoyed providing support to children, adolescents, young people, and adults in relation to depression, anxiety, psychosomatic concerns (psychological distress manifesting through the body), attachment and relationship difficulties, early developmental trauma, adjustment to chronic illness and life transitions, eating disorders, self-harm, and suicidality. She has extensive experience in navigating the mental health system and working systemically as part of multidisciplinary care teams, through senior roles within the Monash Health Early in Life Mental Health Service (Paediatric Consultation and Liaison Psychiatry and Core Community Mental Health) and the Complex Care Program.

Josie is a thoughtful, respectful, and proactive clinician, who seeks to support, and capitalise on, her clients' motivation for emotional wellness. She values the opportunity to work collaboratively, patiently, and respectfully, with her clients to increase their understanding of how their long-standing coping styles may not currently be helpful and how they might develop new coping patterns that are more reflective of their current life circumstances.
